I am a self-employed piano teacher and have I recently set up a limited company for my new studio. The studio is for hiring rooms to individual self-employed teachers - they will all pay rent. Could I pay rent myself through my self-employed business for hiring a room from my own limited company?
Arthur Weller replies:
It is not clear from what you write, but it seems that your limited company A, which trades in giving piano lessons, wants to pay rent for using a piano studio to your limited company B. Company B is essentially a property investment company. There is no reason why A should not pay rent to B. The fact that you own the shares in both A and B is irrelevant. Even so, it is OK for A to pay rent to B. B should charge A the same rental rates that it charges other customers for hiring its studio.
